Our Process

What is letterpress?

Letterpress is the oldest of the traditional printing techniques. It Originated in the early 1400s and was the primary printing technique until the development of lithography late in the 18th century and especially offset lithography early in the 20th century. Letterpress printing involves the impression of an inked surface with another material, usually paper.

A ‘bite’ is the impression that occurs on the paper’s surface when the image is letterpressed with a heavy impression weight. The bite often is what bedazzles people about letterpress and what sets it apart from other forms of printing.

A lighter impression weight is called a ‘kiss’. Kiss impressions, when planned as part of the design, can be just as visually appealing as a bite.

How does it work?

Using letterpress printers for commercial purposes requires an in-depth understanding of the mechanism of letterpress printers and designing techniques.

The printing system involves creating a raised image, often using a photopolymer plate for imprinting designs and words that are to be printed. The raised image is then rolled in ink, and pressed to the paper with the printer.

Once the printing is done, the paper is then cut into the appropriate size. The result is a tactile and vintage finish with an earthy charm.

Why use letterpress?

Sharp Images

Letterpress printers create crisp, clean lines and bold images. The technique uses high-pigment-level ink, making the images and typography sharp and striking. Additionally, unique effects can be achieved when ink colours are letterpressed on colored paper stocks.

Unconventional Paper Stock

Traditional printers find printing on heavy cardstock and thick handmade impossible. Unlike digital or offset printing, commercial-grade stocks such as Chipboard or Graphic Coverboard make intriguing material for letterpress work.

Handcrafted

Letterpress products are handcrafted. This lends a sense of intimacy and craftsmanship to the work. Letterpress adds a distinct character and tone to every design, increasing its value for the end consumer.

Sustainable

When done right, through the use of high-quality recycled paper and eco-friendly ink, letterpress can have a net positive impact on the environment.

The uniqueness of the technique, its vintage effect, and tactile finish makes letterpress printing a great alternative for someone looking for innovative ways to make their designs stand out.
